About Us

The Edmonton Skateboarding Association (ESA) was formed to strengthen and reconnect Edmonton’s skateboarding scene. With fewer indoor spaces available in winter, skaters are often left without a place to progress. ESA exists to reduce those barriers and create safer, more accessible entry points into skateboarding.

We are a non-profit, skater-led organization focused on building consistency and connection. ESA is starting with structured skate nights, beginner-friendly lessons, and day camps designed to support different ages and skill levels. All funds go directly toward insurance, space, gear, and operating costs. Our long-term vision is to grow into a permanent indoor space that supports year-round skateboarding in Edmonton.

Dennis Vanhorn

Dennis is a skateboarder who is excited to share and grow the sport through the association as a tool for the community to connect and a platform for events bringing people together.  He also loves family, snow and fishing.

I began skateboarding as an adult and fell in love with it. Years later I realized how delicate momentum can be when space, support, or confidence fades.

After my own break and return, I was reminded how profound skateboarding can be when it’s shared, supported, and welcomed. ESA needs to exist so that support doesn’t disappear at the wrong time.

Matthias Fikre

Matthias (he/him) is a 33 year-old who has been skating for over ten years. He was the treasurer for the Lethbridge Skateboard Association from 2016-2022. Matthias loves skateboarding because of the mental fortitude required, low cost-to-entry, and community. Skateboarding provides Matthias a place to manage his mental health and a way to connect with others.
